Review: WhiteSmoke Writing Software
Recently the good folk at WhiteSmoke sent me a copy of their writing software to evaluate. So here's my review of this popular tool for writers...
For those who don't know, WhiteSmoke is a program that aims to help its users produce better-written documents. It does this by analyzing the spelling, punctuation and grammar in any document, and then suggesting corrections and possible improvements. WhiteSmoke is compatible with Microsoft Windows ME, Windows2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. It will work in almost any text-based application, including word processors, email programs, web-based forms, and so on.
Once WhiteSmoke is installed on your PC, you use it as follows. First, you create your text in your chosen application (e.g. Microsoft Word). Select the text you want to analyze by highlighting it in the normal way, then press the WhiteSmoke shortcut key. This is set by default to F2, though you can change it if you like. In Word a separate "Enrichment" button is created on the toolbar, and you can click on this as an alternative to pressing the shortcut key.
WhiteSmoke will then open in a new window, with your selected text in a box in the middle. Spelling mistakes are highlighted in red and grammar mistakes in green. When you move the cursor over any item, suggested corrections (a range of them) appear in a box at the foot of the screen. You can accept or reject any correction just by clicking on it.
Perhaps the most interesting feature for writers, however, is the enrichment function. The WhiteSmoke software analyzes your writing and looks for ways it could be improved, e.g. by using an alternate word or phrase (thesaurus function), or by adding extra words. All candidates for enrichment are highlighted in blue in the WhiteSmoke window, and suggested additions and alternatives are shown in the boxes below. Again, you are at liberty to accept or reject any change. Once you have gone through all the program's suggestions, just save the changes and close WhiteSmoke, and the corrected and "enriched" version will automatically appear in the original application.
Overall, I was impressed with how easy WhiteSmoke was to use, and its effectiveness. Obviously Word does have its own spelling and grammar checkers, but WhiteSmoke's appear to work better. This is especially so with the grammar checker, which is far more user-friendly than Word's. The "Enrichment" function is particularly good for revealing ways in which text can be improved. Obviously not all the changes the software suggests will be appropriate, but simply seeing the suggested alternatives can jolt you out of using the same old words and expressions, and give your writing a new, fresher feel.
The version of WhiteSmoke I evaluated was the standard one, which is really aimed at business users. It would still be useful for writers, but WhiteSmoke also offer a version of the software specially tailored for use by creative writers. If you're a novelist or short story writer, this would probably be the version to go for. It has a larger vocabulary than the standard version, and is less likely to suggest inserting business-related terms such as inventory and turnover into your sensitive description of a woodland sunset...
Are there any drawbacks to WhiteSmoke? Well, a possible one for some users is that you need to have an Internet connection open while you are using it. WhiteSmoke say this is because the program's database is constantly updated via the web. For most users this is unlikely to present problems, but if you regularly use your computer off-line, it might be a bit frustrating.
WhiteSmoke is probably ideally suited for writers who are buzzing with ideas but know that they have a few shortcomings in grammar, punctuation, and so on. Even if you're reasonably confident in these areas, however, WhiteSmoke can give you a fresh perspective, and suggestions for improving passages of text you may have become "bogged down" on.

Just a question. What happens when you work off line? Does Whitesmoke interfere with Word? Or, can you simply use Word as you did before Whitesmoke?
Thanks,
Joanne.
WhiteSmoke only launches if you press the shortcut key (F2) or click on the Enrichment button in Word. If you don't do either of these things, WhiteSmoke will not launch and you can use Word as normal.
Hope that answers your question!
Nick
Which WhiteSmoke product would you recommend for a person who needs assistance with proofreading when writing technical and business documents but they also would like to write a novel of their own?
It's always good to give the full story for readers :)
Whitesmoke costs around $80 ($125 for the executive version which includes all the style packages) and $20 for an additional dictionary/translation package. Also, when you reach checkout, be careful - Whitesmoke tacks on a charge for a $7.99 extended license. If you're not paying attention, you may buy the license.
Couldn't tell you if it's really any good or not - I haven't bought it - yet.
I have been evaluating the White Smoke software for over a week. I am not very happy with several options. First, you right the software need internet connection to work otherwise if you are traveler user like me then sorry. Second, their technical support desk is not very fast or pleasant. Third, if you are English low level like me then there are a lot rules have not including in the application (tech responded will include next version). I have not get a version that fully function even they promised to send me one for evaluation. Please check BBB.org before buy.
I have Windows ME and can't get Whitesmoke to work on my system - the technical staff told me that Whitesmoke does not work with Windows 98 or ME, but only with Windows 2000 upwards. The official website states that Windows ME is included & compatible. The blog here states that Windows 98 is o.k - so which information is accurate?
I purchased and installed the "Executive" version on an old laptop, intending to move it to my new desktop PC which was under construction. Well, I've found the program's copy-protection scheme so Draconian, I cannot get it to install on the larger machine, even after uninstalling it from my laptop. The WhiteSmoke help desk has been generating a lot of e-mail promising to help, but providing virtually no help so far. I'm not sure I can recommend this product over StyleWriter and a few others out there that seem to work well and offer vastly better user support.
I purchased the full version of white smoke, the dictionary and grammer work well, but I find their help guide for using the templates very hard to understand. I learned more about the program today reading these reviews than the help file in the software program. I hope that I can still make it work for me as the parts that work are great.thanks.
I bought WhiteSmoke last year and have been very pleased with it. I did have one small problem (due to a misunderstanding on my part), but the WhiteSmoke helpdesk soon solved it for me. Contrary to the earlier comment here, I found them both helpful and quick to respond. I have no hesitation in recommending this product highly.
Do NOT BUY WhiteSmoke..
Check their rating at BBB - It is not good.
I purchased dated 01/19/2008 from Whitesmoke . I tired to download the software, and I have tried to downloading it three times. It is giving me the error installation message below. It is giving me this message "self registration error" and "application has failed to start because is incorrect, reinstalling the application may fix the problem", I tried reinstalling white smoke again, but no sign of progress.
You can see in their forum http://www.whitesmoke.com/forum/read.php?10,664 and at this other help forum http://www.whitesmoke.com/forum/read.php?10,664 that other people are having this problem.
They lists a fax number on their website but they don’t list a number for the client to call. I would really love to use their software.
WhiteSmoke is absolutely horrible. Download a trial first from Tucows or another shareware site. I own three such softwares, and Whitesmoke was the most expensive and by far, the most useless. The prompts and "corrections" WhiteSmoke provides are downright WRONG. Oh, and just TRY to get a refund! Ha!
Guess how many grammar errors Whitesmoke found in the following paragraph? Zero.
I me think once good was Whitesmoke. But grammar found problems no can find. Whitesmoke said artificial intelligence it uses. Me think it intelligence most artificial. No can do it. Whitesmoke full of all smoke. How they say grammar, they check me confused very.
They're not being responsive to my refund requests. I've just filed a dispute with my credit card company.
BBB.org rates Whitesmoke as "Unsatisfactory". Does not want to refund money. Everyone should be aware that this application will not work without an Internet connection. If you are on the road or in a secure network environment you are out of luck. If I read their FAQ correctly it appears that Whitesmoke may be sending the text you are typing to their server for analysis. Bad news if your data is confidential or government related. I think the FBI should look into this enterprise to see if it is a HS vulnerability.
Do you have recommendations for software similar to White Smoke?
Sorry, I haven't tried any other similar software myself. Personally I still like WhiteSmoke, but obviously not everybody commenting here agrees with me!
"but obviously not everybody commenting here agrees with me!"
Nor does www.bbb.org, or any other reviews... So what "bonus" did you receive for this review??
Nothing, I'm afraid! Sponsored posts on this blog are always disclosed. Although I don't do very many these days.
Actually, a quick search on the net will turn up plenty of good reviews for WhiteSmoke. Here's one I found with a quick search on Google: http://www.writersservices.com/res/rev/s_whitesmoke_software.htm
I agree that WhiteSmoke isn't perfect, but I can only speak from my own experience with the software. I've found that it works well and is fun to use. I don't use it all the time by any means, but if I'm getting bogged down with a piece of writing, I find it good for generating fresh ideas and suggestions. I'm pretty confident with grammar and spelling, but if I wasn't I'm sure I'd use WhiteSmoke more.
I've done a little more research on this since my last post. I'd like to make the following points...
1. Many of the negative comments about WhiteSmoke are repeated word for word on other blogs where comments are allowed. It does seem that there is a small group of people who are strongly 'anti' WhiteSmoke and are taking every opportunity to attack them online.
2. I have been unable to verify the comment that WhiteSmoke are rated 'Unsatisfactory' by the BBB. All my searches have failed to find any reference to WhiteSmoke writing software on the BBB site.
3. Likewise, it is simply not true that if you post the text given in the comment above in WhiteSmoke, it will not find any errors. As a WhiteSmoke owner myself, I confirm that it definitely will.
It seems to me, therefore, that certain individuals are pursuing a vendetta against WhiteSmoke for reasons of their own - possibly they may even be commercial rivals. I am not prepared for my blog to be used in this way, and have therefore decided to close this topic for any further comments. I will not delete the negative comments, but I do ask anyone who is considering buying WhiteSmoke to bear my comments about this in mind.
I confirm that personally I am still very happy to endorse WhiteSmoke, based on my experience of using the software. It is not a complete substitute for a human editor, but used sensibly I believe it can be a very useful tool for writers.
